Consumers to Spend Less, Pay with Cash for Holiday Gifts, According to New Survey from Triton Digital
Responses from Over 47,000 Local Media Consumers Provide Insight into Retail Behaviors this Holiday Season
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Triton Digital (www.tritondigital.com), a market leader enabling media companies to manage, measure and monetize their content digitally, today announced the results of a new survey focused on consumer retail behaviors for the upcoming holiday season. Those polled report that they are looking for deep discounts - both online and off - as they plan to spend less money this holiday season and avoid credit card debt. Triton Digital is a premier provider of user database solutions for local media companies and surveyed more than 47,000 consumers from across North America in November.
The survey found that recent economic uncertainty has had an impact on holiday shopping plans. Specifically:
- 61.5% plan to spend less than last year on holiday gifts
- 52% plan to use cash to pay for gifts
- 16.3% do not plan to give gifts this holiday season
- 14.5% plan to use “layaway” for their holiday shopping to spread out payments
Consumers are looking for deals this holiday season. The survey found that:
- 34.3% plan to shop on Black Friday to find deals
- 22% plan to check daily deal sites for discounts
Other interesting findings from the survey include:
- 9.8% plan to do their holiday shopping exclusively online
- 51.6% plan to give to charity
- 26.1% plan to purchase gift cards
- Just 7.4% plan on travelling this holiday season (most will stay home with immediate family)
"It's clear that consumers are looking for deals this holiday season, through both traditional means like in-store Black Friday shopping and new channels like daily deal sites," said Chris Bell, President of Triton Digital Applications and Services. "There is a huge opportunity here for brands and media companies to offer incentives, deals and rewards for loyalty to capitalize on this consumer trend."
Triton Digital's Applications and Services division provides loyalty and engagement solutions for media companies. Triton offers a number of solutions including daily deals, fan clubs, contesting, gamification, social engagement and more.
"As a company that manages the user data for nearly 20 million local media users and fans, the ability for Triton to survey and examine consumers across North America is extraordinary," added Triton Digital Senior Vice President of Engagement, Michael Fischer. "This survey is the first of many that we will be releasing to examine the perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors of millions of people."
